Becoming a League member and an active volunteer is a meaningful way to meet new friends, learn about our various levels of government, and contribute your skills. We can all feel a desire to "do something" to help solve the problems we see in the world. In the League, we take action to influence public policy and to educate and engage voters. Are you interested in joining our efforts? We'd love to have you.
Are you interested in learning about local government and committed to transparency and civic participation? Become part of our Observer Corps to help safeguard open, accountable government in San Mateo County. As an observer, you will attend public meetings, monitor how decisions are made, and report back to the League — strengthening trust and fairness in our community.
Decisions made by local government shape our schools, neighborhoods, safety, and environment. But these decisions must happen in the open, with the public’s right to know protected. Observer Corps volunteers act as watchdogs, ensuring meetings follow the law and uphold democratic values. When residents show up, officials know they are accountable. Your presence makes a difference.

Are you passionate about ensuring fair representation in local government? Join our dynamic team advocating for the creation of an Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) in San Mateo County. This critical work aims to take the power of drawing district lines out of the hands of elected officials and put it into an independent, citizen-run commission—ensuring fairness, equity, and representation for all.
Our goal is for San Mateo County to adopt an independent redistricting commission (IRC) to establish County district boundaries for future elections. When politicians draw district lines, they can manipulate boundaries to serve their interests instead of the community’s. This process, known as gerrymandering, undermines democracy and diminishes the voices of underrepresented communities. By advocating for an IRC, you’ll help make sure district maps reflect the demographics and needs of our county’s diverse population.
• Learn about redistricting and the impact of district boundaries on representation.
• Work with others to build support for this initiative across the county.
This is a meaningful opportunity to:
• Be part of a statewide and national effort to eliminate gerrymandering.
• Collaborate with passionate advocates for democracy.
• Learn as you go—no prior expertise is needed!

The League doesn't just talk about democracy—we shape it! Our positions are built on thoughtful study, spirited discussions, and consensus-building. This year, we’re diving into something big: local government transparency and accountability. In collaboration with the South County League, we are investigating how local elections are financed, how reports are handled, and whether the public has easy access to this vital information.
Help us uncover the story behind the money in local politics. By joining this team, you’ll help shine a light on hidden processes, spark important conversations, and set the stage for meaningful reform.
Be part of the change. Let’s dig in, ask the tough questions, and make local government work better for everyone. Ready to join? E-mail info@lwvncsmc.org for more information.
